Jodie Whittaker's voice as a synthesiser
As a lifelong fan of the show, this was a dream gig. I wrote a brand-new theme for Jodie’s Doctor, motifs for the Daleks and the weeping angels plus our new friends and foes. I also managed to sample controls from the TARDIS set in Cardiff and turn them into percussion for the tracks you hear while piloting the ship.
Vintage synths as heard in classic Doctor Who make many appearances, with some eerie, Radiophonic Orchestra-esque tracks sitting side-by-side with full orchestral work featuring the fantastic FAMEs orchestra in Macedonia.
Each video game project brings fresh new demands and idiosyncrasies, with VR being no exception. This score featured a mix of music that was horizontally reactive (transitioning to different music), vertically (add/remove musical layers depending on your actions) and other parts which were scored-to-picture and tightly synced to key action or expositional moments.
It’s been exceptionally heartwarming to see the reaction to the music, and to see which nods to the past people recognise and appreciate, alongside the new themes and new musical ideas throughout the score.
