Finding the sound
OF sachi's world
After some discussion, and a lot of demos, we eventually found the sound world for Saachi’s environment, both in the pastoral, East-Asian-like overworld and the murkier steampunk-tinged underworld.
There are Tibetan chants, Japanese flutes, glassy synth pads and a heavily-processed ukulele. But the soul of this sound, and Sachi’s theme in particular, are performed by viola player Bruce White. Sometimes on an acoustic viola playing the glassy, nasal ‘sul ponticello’ sound, and at other times performed on an electric viola. This perfectly suited our intention to have a characterful solo, melodic instrument which would have a distinct timbre but wouldn’t call to anywhere too geographically specific. Most of the melodies are based on the pentatonic scale, and Saachi’s son’s theme is an inversion of her own, as a symbolic nod to their own relationship.
